1957 GMC Pickup

I had a friend, back in the early 1970's, whose father owned a small construction company. The father had a handful of old trucks including a 3/4 ton pickup, about a 1957 and a Suburban, also a '57 model, from the days when Suburbans were crew trucks rather than Yuppie trucks. He gave my friend the old Suburban, and David fixed it up, drove it frantically, and treated it with the sort of love and callousness that might be lavished, simultaneously, by a young man on a prized vehicle. I happened to undertake this little project a few weeks before I received word that David had died in a motorcycle accident at age 57. Without advance intention, then, this model stands as a memorial to my friend..

I used the AMT 1955 Chevrolet Apache pickup kit for this model, using pieces of a parts tree to make a reasonable semblance of a GMC truck bumper and using a set of GM fenders included in the '53 Ford kit to help turn the Apache bed into a single-walled truck bed. '57 GMC
